The No Smoking Orchestra is totally smoking in every language

Bummer is that if you want to catch their next show you'll have to go to Latvia , but trust me it will be totally worth the trip.  The No Smoking Orchestra is pretty mind blowing.  The pics on their site of last night's show in NY don't do justice to the rocking intensity of the thing.  But I do see me and Lota in one or two of them.

Green Porno

Everyone knows about this except me, right?

Saw this ref in Brooklyn Based:
WEDNESDAY: Birds Do It, Bees Do It
Tonight, join the ever-fabulous Isabella Rossellini at Coco66 for a screening of Green Porno, a book signing, a Q&A session, and truffle popcorn. The acclaimed actress wrote and acted in this series of short films for the Sundance Channel; each segment features Ms. Rossellini in elaborate costume explaining and reenacting the sexual proclivities of creatures from snails to starfish. The event, put together by WORD, celebrates the release of the shorts on DVD, as well as an accompanying book; $25 gets you two tickets to the event and a copy of the book, and of course the aforementioned gourmet popcorn. Date night?
and of course I popped right over to Green Porno itself, where lots of episodes are on line.  Gonna watch them all.

DeHavilland Beaver, our new best friend

Me having lived largely in Neuva York and it's immediate environs, and Lori largely here or in the desert, we haven't had all that much experience with float planes. And I get queasy on merry-go-rounds, you know?

But... all that's over now. We had a couple of float plane flights as part of this past weekend's journey. Think Teletubbies. Again again again again!

We love you, DeHavilland Beaver!

DIY hallucinogenic goggles

Via Make:
This post will describe how to construct a pair of goggles which can be used to induce geometric visual hallucinations via strobe light patterns. This tutorial should be accessible to anyone familiar with Arduino hacking, and I do not go into details of the electronics design. The effects are quite remarkable, and enjoyed by many.

Oh, the music references in Inherent Vice

Gee, except for the one drunken post I didn't say much about Inherent Vice - but let me say this: Pynchon's musical references are a blast and I can't tell when they blur from real to made up. My two favorite real ones (real as in I remember them from the first time around and there they are in the book) are to Thunderclap Newman's Something In the Air, and more generally, to Wildman Fischer (who's tune I remember best is Merry-Go-Round).

Purple rain, purple rain

NPR piece about last evening's Purple Rain screening and sing-along down the block. And, jah betcha, we were there. Most bestest stupidest fun. Wish you were there, too. Go crazy. I woke up today and I was still singing it, and started thinking, Hey, maybe I could play some of these tunes on the uke... (No.)

some miscellaneous linkage from ju ju's desktop...

long been a fan of Chronicle columnist J. Carroll who delivered this to us yesterday and revisits the topic today;
then, there's an interesting story on the topic of self control provided us via the New Yorker's Jonah Lehrer entitled Don't!;
then, ya already know we pointed ye in the direction of the Morning News in yesterday's post, and that's where we found this piece on our (well, most of us in this category these days) penchant for collecting one thing or another;
and wrapping this up, something interesting and, mmmmmmmmm, well, hard to describe going on at Clusterflock today...
tiny wee bit of clarification necessary here:
today refers to the clusterflock posts of the 14th of May

p.s. ju ju's alter id jaypea be seriously considering resurrecting l'marquis d'monquis effort, currently in hiatus. Dis be sorta inspired by dinner conversation with friend last night 'bout all the hot air currently being expended on the topic of bush cadministration's torture policies,etc. without nary a word of the School of the Americas, and no, we not gonna get started on it here, but consider yerselves forewarned...

where ju ju spent his saddidey...

amongst good friends and many fellow guitarists,
an afternoon of music, the pause that refresheth, yummy munchies,
lots of beer and wine, and more music, music, music...

be forewarned, there will be video w/Audio;
let the caterwauling ensue!

Naked clown calendar

This ukulelia post points you to the naked clown calendar. How did I not discover this before Christmas? Lost opportunities. No, I am not going to create a "naked clown" tag. Or even "clown" tag.

Where to spend Nov 4... The Gate?

Well, the gate hasn't announced anything yet, but it was my favorite spot for watching the debates this year. It's the last of the bars we wound up in during the last presidential, too. Unless it was next to last. Or the one before that. It really hurts to remember. In any case, it's a fine, partisan venue.

early here on the left coast yet...

here at the j - o - b wit my coffee and donut, that comestible reminding mineowndamnedself of effort by Beth B, another hardworking drone here at nonopress,
donuts for hope...

for some goshdarned crazy reason, great old tune been running constantly in my head since hangin' out the laundry early this Am, my memory of it coming from Frank Sinatra's version, tho' there be plenty of 'em out there, but the song itself, truly one of the great tunes of all time, All or Nothing at All...

some controversy brewing in a town familiar with same,
'Berkeley Big People' making locals go "ugh-ly!"...
in that article is mention of statue on S.F.'s Market St by
Stephen de Staebler, a piece yourstruly has ambled by & admired many a morning on our way to work oncet upon a time;
a picture of 'Angel" available within this page

Holy Boy!
dis seems a lot more like the version of that Sinatra tune me recalls so fondly, Xtra added linky bonus: Frankie Chords!

Rye Playland photo archive

Times article, Available Soon Online: Fun from Depression-Era Playland. Mmmmm, one more fine source of images for labels and stickers!

My own best memories of Rye Playland come from the late 70's, sneaking onto the grounds in the middle of the night. Spooky prowly scary. And, Howard G, if you're out there - "Hey, Quacky, where's Bill?!"

Sarah Palin turned down as chair of Brooklyn West Indian Day parade - not enough experience

NY Daily News and NY1 are both reporting the expected crowds this afternoon at the West Indian Day parade to be about 3 million people. In her petition to WIADCA Governor Palin (R-AK) claimed her experience governing 0.67 million people for the last two years made her the best qualified person in America to chair this parade. And she's a girl.

(Hi. We're back from the great northwest. See you soon.)
